Washington Post March

The Washington Post March needs no introduction. It is, along with Stars and Stripes Forever,  one of the most famous Marches ever composed by John Philip Sousa.

At age 6, John Philip received lessons for singing, violin, piano, flute, cornet, baritone/euphonium, trombone and alto horn. Apparently, his parents had difficulty making choices. At the age of 13, his father (who was himself a trombonist) placed him as an instrumentalist in the United States Marine Band The President's Own. Eventually, in 1880, he became conductor of this prestigious military orchestra.

To promote the newspaper The Washington Post, its owners (Wilkins and Hatton) asked John Philip Sousa, to compose a march for the newspaper’s essay contest awards ceremony. That is when Sousa composed his The Washington Post March.

So whenever you have to pimp an awards ceremony: look no further!
