Francis Popy would never have guessed that his delicate waltz Sphinx?, picturing the vast deserts of Egypt, was in 1997 to be used in a movie with an abundance of water and ice (Titanic).
Popy, a French composer, studied at the Conservatoire en musique de Lyon. At the age of 19 he joined the French army to become a musician in the 74e Régiment d’infanterie in Rouen. Here he composed and performed his first compositions.
Sphinx?, a waltz composed in 1906, is one of his best known pieces. The delicate melody gurgles forth like a quiet stream.....
